Have you planted your herb as a seedling in a small pot and then left it there? Then you have the answer to why your plant is not root bound.Ī root-bound mint is very likely deficient of minerals and/or water. In extreme cases, there might be more roots than soil.Ī root bound takes place when the pot is simply too small for the herb. This creates a thick solid web of roots (also known as root ball). Rootbound is a condition that affects potted plants when their roots have extended throughout the whole soil, reaching the container walls and pushing against them. Let’s see which problems your mint might have and how to solve them. Hence, even if its legginess is due to some unwanted mistreatment, it will very likely recover in 1-2 months. Indeed, to be such an invasive plant, mint needs to be (and it is) very strong and resistant. Why is this important to your leggy mint?Īlthough this might sound like a bad attribute, this means that mint is an extremely stubborn herb that can survive a large variety of conditions and “mistreatment” from you or whoever takes care of them. Countless gardeners with outdoor garden complaints about mint invasion (I wish to have such a problem if the mint is of good quality) and how to get rid of it. Mint, by many, is seen as an invasive species, a bit like a random and unwanted weed. Leggy Mint: Many Potential Problems and One Good News These guidelines apply to both mint in a container and not (in case just skip the root bound problem). First, you need to understand which is the problem your herb is facing and then take action accordingly. Should you throw your hardly grown mint and go for another one? Not so fast.

Instead of querying the whole dataset, it will query partitioned dataset. With partitioning, data is stored in separate individual folders on HDFS. ORC supports compressed (ZLIB and Snappy), as well as uncompressed storage. Let's say we will use join to fetch details from both tables. The ORCFile format is better than the Hive files format when it comes to reading, writing, and processing the data. Optimized Row Columnar format provides highly efficient ways of storing the hive data by reducing the data storage format by 75% of the original. Vectorization can be enabled in the environment by executing below commands. It improves the performance for operations like filter, join, aggregation, etc. Vectorization improves the performance by fetching 1,024 rows in a single operation instead of fetching single row each time. Tez engine can be enabled in your environment by setting to tez: set =tez Use Vectorization Tez improved the MapReduce paradigm by increasing the processing speed and maintaining the MapReduce ability to scale to petabytes of data. Use Tez EngineĪpache Tez Engine is an extensible framework for building high-performance batch processing and interactive data processing. Hive provides an SQL-like interface to query data stored in various data sources and file systems. Both file formats utilize different function for data retrieval: HiveTableScan vs.Apache Hive is a data warehouse built on the top of Hadoop for data analysis, summarization, and querying.Compare the ORC and Parquet executions with Snappy Configuration:.ORDER BY item_sk, review_sentence, sentiment, sentiment_word SELECT extract_sentiment ( pr_item_sk, pr_review_content )ĪS ( item_sk, review_sentence, sentiment, sentiment_word ) SELECT item_sk, review_sentence, sentiment, sentiment_word Exceptions are the queries involving text processing, which do not benefit from using any compression. Using ZLIB compression brings up to 60.2% improvement with ORC, while Parquet achieves up to 7% improvement with Snappy. We show that ORC generally performs better on Hive, whereas Parquet achieves best performance with SparkSQL. Our experiments confirm that the file format selection and its configuration significantly affect the overall performance. We use BigBench (TPCx-BB), a standardized application-level benchmark for Big Data scenarios. We apply our strategy to two processing engines, Hive and SparkSQL, and evaluate the performance of two columnar file formats, ORC and Parquet. In this work, we propose an alternative approach: by executing each file format on the same processing engine, we compare the different file formats as well as their different parameter settings. Related works consider the performance of processing engine and file format together, which makes it impossible to predict their individual impact. Columnar file formats provide an efficient way to store data to be queried by SQL-on-Hadoop engines. Long before its modern-day remake, the original CTR surprised and delighted fans with a mascot racer worthy of excitement alongside Nintendo's long-standing franchise. While many have come for the Mario Kart throne, Crash Team Racing, surprisingly, is perhaps the kart racer to come closest. Oddly enough, Ape Escape proved to be oddly prescient in 2016, a chimpanzee named Chacha escaped from a Japanese zoo, and local police were able to subdue him safely – presumably thanks to simulations they’d run in Ape Escape. Nowadays, such a mechanic would be deemed “gimmicky,” but the late ‘90s was a simpler time, and Ape Escape’s solid implementation stuck the landing. Each of these gadgets was controlled by waggling the DualShock’s right stick, a concept akin to rubbing your stomach and patting your head back in 1999. Players were given the urgent task of subduing them with variety of gadgets regularly implemented by real life animal control specialists, such as a hula hoop, remote control car, and a device like a kayak paddle that could be spun around really fast to achieve flight. How do you rally players to adopt this new technology? You present them with the threat of rampant, mischievous apes.Īs the title would suggest, Ape Escape told the timeless tale of a group of mischievous primates on the loose. Nowadays, holding a PlayStation controller without the familiar analog sticks feels almost unnatural – like wearing someone else’s shoes, or when your arm falls asleep after leaning on it wrong – but there was a time when the DualShock controller seemed like an unnecessary gimmick. Mega Man Legends 2 changed all that, presenting one of the most unique and charming 3-D action/adventures ever, and the sequel only improved on the formula. Mega Man Legends 2īefore Mega Man Legends, I don’t think people really thought of the Mega Man series as being all that great for story and character. They even got Stan Lee himself to do all the descriptions of each character in the character viewer!Īll these years later, Sony is releasing the new Spider-Man 2 for PS5 in October. It was also filled with easter eggs and secrets, including many, many Marvel cameos (like the Human Torch and Daredevil), unlockable costumes like Spider-Man 2099, the Amazing Bag Man costume or even his classic Captain Universe getup. This was the first Spider-Man game many of us played that really captured Spidey’s unique method of traversal, swinging between buildings, climbing up walls and acrobatically taking down enemies. Spider-Manĭeveloped by Neversoft (the same developers behind the Tony Hawk franchise), PS1’s Spider-Man served as the template for pretty much all the good superhero games to follow. Perhaps the most robust Crash of the original three games, Warped uses its time-hopping set dressing to offer a wide variety of levels, enemies, and tricky create locations, but makes them all feel part of a fun, cohesive whole. While Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped had base levels that weren't as rewardingly challenging as Cortex Strikes Back's, it still offers plenty of extremely fun platforming levels, mixed in with a host of vehicle/riding challenges. While we've ranked Crash Bandicoot 2 higher, it's undeniable just how important the entire Crash trilogy was to the PlayStation legacy – and that largely comes down to just how damn fun and challenging Naughty Dog made those first three games. Abe’s Oddysee is fondly remembered for its bonkers character design and deep lore, which led to several fun, weird sequels and spinoffs like ‘Munch’s Oddysee’ and ‘Stranger’s Wrath, and featured unique systems for communicating and working together with your fellow Mudokons, plus various alien species you can ride, telepathically possess, or manipulate into taking out your enemies for you. Oddworld: Abe’s Odyssey was such a weird game an action/puzzle/platformer with a story that’s sort of like a crazy outer-space Soylent Green. Plenty of these Pomeranian mixes found in shelters need a forever home.īoth parent breeds are well-known and popular dogs. They’re part Pomeranian and part Australian Shepherd, which surprisingly balances each other out quite well.Īnd despite the “designer dog” label, they’re far more common than you think! If you have your eyes set on a Aussie Pom, always check your local animal shelter first. Parents: Aussie x Pomeranian mix via Instagram: Poms are the ultimate designer dogs that combine exuberance, work ethic, fun-loving energy and a friendly attitude. As a result, many of the Pom mixes also show these physical characteristics that have been around for thousands of years. Pomeranians have a distinct appearance, as seen with most spitz-type dog breeds. In fact, our family had a Pomeranian, though we had always suspected that she was mixed with the Chow Chow. Pomeranian mixes are far more common than you think. And since Pomeranians are so prevalant, they’ve become one of the most common candidates for designer dogs. The modern Pomeranian is such a great family dog that they’re one of the top 25 most popular breeds in America. While they were once larger sled-pulling dogs from the arctic, Pomeranians we’re re-developed and downsized (twice!) to become some of the world’s best companion lap dogs. Another tip is to use thinner yarn to tie the knots to secure the pom pom, and I know that some people also use hot glue to secure the knots and middle strand to prevent the pom pom from coming apart! Making the smallest pom poms can be a little tricky, and it is VERY important to densely wind the yarn around the arches (3 times) so that the middle strand tying the knots is not visible.Pomeranians may be small in size, but they’re full of personality and charm. This antique red bronze pair of scissors is from Warm Crochet, and they are fantastic with the pom pom maker. One important tip is to use very sharp and pointy scissors when cutting the yarn along the groove of the Pom Pom Maker. Out of all the sizes, I definitely use the Large Pom-Pom Maker set the most!īelow you can see me holding one of the smaller pom poms to show you how tiny they are! These could be used for smaller garlands, pom pom jewelry or purse charms (see more ideas HERE). As you can see, the XL pom pom is a hefty size and certainly would make a statement atop a beanie! I generally use the 3 3/8″ size for adult hats and the 2 1/2″ size for child hats. Here are the largest three sizes with a knitted hat ( Knitted Fair Isle Beanie blog post HERE) to show you what they look like with a finished item. I used Lion Brand Yarn’s Vanna’s Choice for the smaller pom poms and Wool-Ease Thick & Quick for the larger pom poms! I used all the different sizes to make 7 different pom poms to show you the relative difference in size. XL Pom-Pom Maker (comes with 1): creates approximately 4 1/2″ pom pom.Large Pom-Pom Maker (comes with 2): creates approximately 2 1/2″ and 3 3/8″ pom poms.Small Pom-Pom Maker (comes with 2): creates approximately 1 3/8″ and 1 5/8″ pom poms.

My friend who accompanied me later told me she was concerned because the piercer kept closing his eyes for extended amounts of time right before the piercing. I pushed the small talk hard, and even asked, “What’s your favorite piercing to do?” to which he replied, “I like the people,” leaving me confused, unsatisfied, and desperate for his approval. I had the painful pleasure of being pierced by a man whose name I don’t remember but face I will never forget. You should also be prepared for the people you will meet on your journey. I do not recommend the crippling fear that comes when you’re unsure if you just gave a man the go-ahead to stab you in an acceptable location. When the piercer marked a dot on my nose and asked if the placement was okay, I said yes, and then a wave of doubt consumed me. What it actually did was make me paranoid that I had compromised my judgment terribly and that I was way more intoxicated than in reality. It seemed harmless, and I felt confident that it would help me calm any nerves about the pain. Prior to the piercing, I may or may not have indulged in a glass of wine. You might think this need not be said, but I would be remiss not to include every detail of my experience. I’d like to offer some advice to the prospective “piercees” out there: Do not go to Rockstar while under the influence of alcohol or any drug. My point: If you’re looking for that edgy vibe guaranteed to terrify and disappoint your mother, you will not find it here. I wasn’t sure how the piercers would be able to see their work, but I still felt strangely confident that they could perform their jobs based on touch alone. In my dreams, Rockstar Body Piercing was a grungy and hardcore store, lit by some well-placed blacklights at the most, or a singular unshaded lightbulb at the least. Here’s what really caught me off guard: It is an extremely well-lit establishment. My point is, I didn’t know much about real piercing parlors, but now that I am a seasoned and experienced veteran, I feel qualified to present you with a guide to Rockstar Body Piercing. It was a simple experience that apparently left me hungry for more, because I felt compelled to pay another person to put another hole in my body! Nothing better than throwing your hard-earned dollar at a stranger in exchange for a light stabbing, am I right, ladies?! I got my ears pierced at the tender age of sixteen in Claire’s (which, by the way, is the only acceptable reason to be in Claire’s when your tween years are behind you). On this day in history, not only did they poke a hole in my nose – they also poked a hole in my fantasy of what a piercing parlor looks like. Last Wednesday I entered Rockstar Body Piercing on Thayer Street for the first time in my life, and it was a milestone to be sure. The Haunted Mansion is a fun, tongue in cheek look at the spirit world. You might even spot a tomb stone for our old friend Mr Toad from the beloved, but now extinct, Walt Disney World attraction Mr. On your way out of the mansion check out the pet graveyard on the left hand side. I’ll leave you some surprises but one word of caution – beware of hitchhiking ghosts! Our friendly Ghost Host catches up with us here for his farewells. Passing out of the graveyard you are told to hurry back and to be sure and bring your death certificate. Can you find the grim reaper by the opera singers? Look for the cloth he is holding and you’ll see yet another Hidden Mickey. Here you’ll meet spooks and ghosts singing along with the Haunted Mansion’s theme song, Grim Grinning Ghosts. Your Doom Buggy will now leave the mansion and take you through the graveyard. Something seems to have happened to all of them leaving her with wedding gifts and a heavy (and loud) heart. Moving into the attic you meet the bride who’s had her fair share of grooms. Look up and down and all around this room – these ghosts know how to celebrate! Notice the place setting at the far left hand side of the banquet table – it’s in the shape of our favorite mouse! The organ is a replica of Captain Nemo’s organ in the Disney film 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Your Ghost Host invites you to this swinging wake so sit back in your Doom Buggy and enjoy the party. This is an area full of details and no matter how many times you visit the mansion there will always be something new to see here. Your next stop on the tour will be to the ballroom. Here creepies and crawlies are summoned as you join in the séance and are sent a message from somewhere beyond. Named after Disney imagineer Leota Toombs, you might recognize Madame Leota’s voice as the same voice as Maleficent in Sleeping Beauty. In the next room you will attend a séance with Madame Leota. Then in the conservatory you find you are a bit too late for a funeral. This hallway leads to another hallway, this one without an end and with many ghosts who are dying to get out. Beginning your tour in the portrait gallery, the pictures eerily follow you on your journey down the hallway. You will now board a Doom Buggy, an egg shaped vehicle with sound speakers, for the rest of your visit. Can you figure it out? When the doors open move forward, don’t drag behind or the gargoyles on the wall will whisper for you to “get out”. Is the ceiling moving up or is the floor moving down? This room at the Haunted Mansion in Disneyland moves one way while the room at Walt Disney World moves the other direction. He invites us into the next room which contains portraits that look normal enough until the room begins to stretch (or is it just your imagination?). We also meet our Ghost Host who will be our tour guide along the way. Don’t rush through this room, take time to watch the portrait over the fireplace and take in the décor. You are greeted at the door by the housekeeper or butler and enter into the foyer of the mansion. These tombstones are all nods to those imagineers and artists who contributed to the Haunted Mansion and the early years of Walt Disney World. This is one of the many queues at Walt Disney World where it’s actually fun to wait in line. The queue includes an interactive pipe organ, a musical crypt, stone busts and infamous headstones such as “Here Lies Good Old Fred ~ A Great Big Rock Fell On His Head” and “In Memorium Uncle Myall ~ Here You’ll Lie – For Quite A While”. As you walk up to the front of the mansion an old, worn out, horse drawn hearse greets you with a taste of what’s to come. It was important to Walt Disney that nothing inside of the Magic Kingdom would look run down or shabby so the mansion itself is quite beautiful.Īs with many Disney attractions the experience begins in the queue. The outside of the mansion is what you might find in the Hudson River Valley of New York and is perched on a hill overlooking the Rivers of America. Come visit Disney’s Haunted Mansion, home to 999 Happy Haunts (there’s room for one more ~ any volunteers?). Tucked in a quiet corner of Liberty Square, in the back of the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World, is a stately manor with a rather spooky feel. Don’t worry – while you may find some spooks here everything is on the silly side so nothing out of any horror movies. Boo! With Halloween right around the corner I thought this would be a good time to pop in to the Haunted Mansion for a tour.
